Lancaster is always interested to speak with applicants who are eager to learn the sheet metal trade and demonstrate the high level of competency and commitment we deliver to our customers.

The qualifications we look for in an apprentice:

  • Has a safety conscious approach to work
  • Is mechanically inclined
  • Is knowledgeable about sheet metal and the construction industry
  • Is able to work with hand tools and operate a forklift truck
  • Is comfortable working at high heights
  • Has good math and computer skills
  • Can draw and read blueprints
  • Is in excellent physical condition
  • Has completed the Sheet Metal Worker Pre-Apprenticeship program at Mohawk College

Required documentation:

  1. Resume and cover letter
  2. A copy of your Grade 12 certificate
  3. Results of your aptitude test from Local #537, Sheet Metal Workers Union. Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 70%
  4. A copy of your driver’s license
  5. A copy of your driving abstract from the Ministry of Transportation
  6. Copies of any training certificates you’ve received i.e., safety training, Mohawk College Pre-Apprenticeship training

If you are contacted for an interview, please bring originals of all required documentation to the interview.

Following the interview, successful candidates will be offered a 3-month trial period under Lancaster supervision. Applicant must then pay a $27.00 signing charge at Local #537 and $17.00 monthly dues thereafter.

If hired on by Lancaster (after 3-month) trial period), applicant must:

  1. Sign with Local #537 as a union member. Union dues are payable for as long as you are union member in the sheet metal trade (whether you’re working at Lancaster or for another sheet metal contractor).
  2. Pay a $40.00 fee to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. This indentures the applicant to Lancaster for an apprenticeship of 5 1800-hour years. Apprenticeships are regulated by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
  3. Attend mandatory trade school, either at The Ontario Sheet Metal Worker’s Training Centre in Oakville or at Mohawk College, Stoney Creek campus:
    • Day school: 3 terms of 2 months each throughout the 5-year apprenticeship. Regulated by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
    • Night school: one night a week throughout 5-year apprenticeship (usually starts in winter). Regulated by Local #537 and Hamilton Sheet Metal Contractors’ Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
  4. Pass the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities exam at the conclusion of the 5th term.

Apprenticeship Pay Scale, based on 5 1800-hour years

  • 40% of mechanics rate in first year (including 3-month trial period)
  • 50% of mechanics rate in second year
  • 60% of mechanics rate in third year
  • 70% of mechanics rate in fourth year
  • 80% of mechanics rate in fifth year
